September Newsletter

Hi All
Good things are happening, with a light at the end of the tunnel! We are looking forward to being able to run things out of our own workshop sometime in October, at this point. This is very good news. It has been pretty tough without our own space, and we appreciate your commitment over this difficult time. There will be opportunities to help out coming up, we will keep you informed :)

Welcome to our new members this month, we look forward to sharing some time together.

Don't forget you can make use of our mentoring program by contacting one of the listed mentors.

Once again, anything you would like to contribute to the newsletter would be welcome, or ask a question and we can post an answer - there are some people with fantastic technical know-how here.
Just send me an email joannacrompton@gmail.com  ( I will be away between 19th Sept and 2nd October, but I will get back to you after that).

Cheers
Jo

Mentoring and Studio Time Programme

Members of the Guild have offered their time and home studios for a new Mentoring
and Studio time programme. The programme is designed to be flexible and all you
have to do is to ring around the mentors until you find one who is available and
arrange a rendezvous. It is expected you would give a donation of $10.00 to the
mentor which will go to the Guild. Once we are in our permanent space this
programme will continue but will be held in the Guild workshop.

Mentors
Noeline Walker ~ Halswell      ph 322 4131
Arthur Harrison ~ Wainoni      ph 382 1332
Karen Atherton ~ St Martins    ph 337 6632
Jo Crompton ~  Spreydon        ph 981 8061

Guidelines:
• The mentoring and Studio time programme is available to all financial
members of the Guild

• The member would need to ring the mentor and discuss the project to ensure
they have the mentor who can best meet their needs

• Once the mentor has been established the member will need to arrange a time
for a session which is suitable to all involved

• The duration of the session will be arranged between the mentor and member
• The member should organise the materials – silver, stone etc - required for
the project – mentors will not be responsible for providing any materials

• The mentoring and studio time is to enable members to learn, solve problems
and complete projects started at a workshop or for the Guild Exhibition.

• Remember you are using the tools and equipment belonging to the mentor so
ensure you treat them with care

New Display Cases

The new display cases for the Guild look amazing. They are self lit and I think our work is going to look its very best when we next have a show. Isn't that something to look forward to? We are planning to have an exhibition next year, at this point. Christchurch is very short of venues at the moment which has put paid to doing anything before then. However, we will be able to put on something with great style in these cases!

Summary of Committee Meeting 3, 2012
 SIT, 7pm
Arthur, Karen, Jo, Solvejg, Diederic, John W, Noeline

Correspondence:  Karen will send John Ogilvie a thank you note and wishes for his health to improve.
Treasurer's report We are in reasonable health financially.  Reports distributed by Diederic.
Classes:  Noeline reported that we have three people interested in classes and thirteen to follow up on.  She made up new attendance certificates and passed them around for comments.  Suggests maybe having a combined social Show and Tell session after classes end.
Membership:  John transferred membership stuff to Jo
Exhibition:  Karen and Mark to meet with Buddhist Temple people tomorrow.
Tannery:   Arthur rang Grant McIvor re October 1 completion date.  He said they are working toward that but not to burn any bridges at SIT because we might have to stay there for a little while.  Arthur will pay $978 for an under-sink bench with cupboards and shelves.  He also sourced a polisher/sander at George Henry for $650 w/o discount.  We can probably get a trade price from them.  The woodworkers have a sample of our benches but the benches are not in production yet.  Display cabinet plinths need to be cheaper and simpler.

Diederic spoke to Grant about fire risk.  Since there is less than 24 metres egress we do not need another exit.  We do need a fire extinguisher.  We are limited to 20 people unless we make ad hoc arrangements.   The lease has gone to the lawyer and has been okayed.  Diederic has the agreement if anyone wants to see it.  The rent is less than expected $6840 ex GST and $7800 incl GST, $655 per month.  There is a two year capped $136 per month outgoings charge but after two years we pay a percentage of the area rented.

Diederic moved to sign the lease, Noeline seconded and everyone agreed.

Lighting.  Six fluorescent daylight hanging lights are included.

Eco friendly etching set-up rather than nitric acid and fume hood assembly:  Sol will talk to Katrina Breheaut at Hagley to discuss pros and cons so we can decide what we want to to.

Sol met a jeweler who wants to join the Guild.  We will need to meet her and talk to her to evaluate her skills.

Meeting ended 8 p.m.

Notes from Meeting at Buddhist Temple Sept 2012

Mark and I met with See-Shen Lee at the Buddhist Temple on Riccarton Road to discuss our request for exhibition space in January 2013 and December 2013..  The temple will be closed 24 Sept 2012 through 31 Dec 2012 for earthquake repairs.  They informed us that a Jan 2013 exhibition is not possible.  An exhibition would be possible, however, 1 Dec 2013 through 31 Dec 2013 - obviously covering the run-up to Xmas.

They will require a 30-45% commission (incl EFTPOS charges) to be decided by their committee.  We would obviously push for low end. The Temple is willing to manage cash and EFTPOS, which means that SSG might not need a member present every day.

They are suggesting a Saturday opening.  They could cater a nice tea-party for 100 people, which includes venue rental, food, drinks for about $1000 (need to specify incl GST).  They can work to a fit a budget but usually in the range $8 to $15 per head. No alcohol.

The Temple / gallery has a mailing list of 1500 members, so for the opening we would invite 50 SSG members + guests and 50 Temple / gallery members. RSVP required.

SSG must provide at least two posters, each 1900 x 1205mm (standard size) - SSG usual exhibition poster format will be fine.

If this sounds like it would be acceptable, we suggest a delegation from SSG visit the Temple in Feb 2013, to look around - See-Shen Lee will give a tour.

Overall it is a gorgeous space with lots of visibility to the public by virtue of being on Riccarton Rd.  It would be a lot of work to get a 3 or 4 week exhibition together, and more expensive than usual, but quite possibly very good rewards for putting on the show.  We obviously need to discuss with Committee.

Should we hold  a Jan 2013 exhibition in Tannery workshop space?
